Right Thinking

usa_usa-290.jpgYou’re right. There, I said it. You – adamant, fervent, unapologetic supporter of Donald J. Trump – are right.

You’re right to believe that the system is rigged against you, because it is. Equal opportunity for all is now and always has been a myth. And so you support a man who is the living embodiment of inherited privilege, a man who proudly boasts of having purchased political influence for personal gain. You support a man who regards you as nothing more than a loser because you’re not fabulously wealthy.

You’re right to believe that America’s manufacturing sector has withered, because it has. And so you support a man whose isolationist trade policies would further weaken our economy. You support a man who speaks of bringing jobs back to America, for Americans, yet hires undocumented workers to build his gaudy buildings and manufactures his tacky tat overseas.

You’re right to believe that values matter. Remember when you used to harp on about that every election cycle? And so you support a man who is a proud philanderer, a serial adulterer, and likely a sexual predator. You support a man who has, on several occasions, expressed having a sexual interest in his own daughter. You support a man who has, on several occasions, expressed having a sexual interest in young girls.

You’re right to believe that our very Democracy is under threat. We can never take our freedoms for granted, and the status of our liberty is a matter of constant struggle. And so you support a man who has an avowed affinity for militaristic dictators, including Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi, and Vladimir Putin. You support a man who at every campaign event, every interview and every debate has stated, unequivocally, that he will rule by decree and ignore the checks and balances of our Republic. You support a man who is utterly and entirely ignorant in regards to the workings of our government.

You’re right to believe that the tax system is overly complicated, burdensome, and asks too much of working middle class families. And so you support a man who claims he is a genius for not paying taxes (allegedly legally), thus increasing the burden upon working middle class families. You support a man who gladly starves the Treasury of revenue while happily reaping the benefits – roads, bridges, ports, airports, the military, etc. – of government services.

You’re right to believe that ‘political correctness’ has altered the national social landscape. The times, they are a changing. And so you support the right man to carry your racist, jingoistic, misogynistic, xenophobic, homophobic banners. You support a man who can always be counted on to take the low road in any discussion, a man who knows not how to be a polite, decent, consciences human being. You support a man who, like you, is on the wrong and losing side of history. You support a man who, like you, is trapped in a hate filled past.

You’re right to believe that ‘the elites’, those who both have and choose to utilise their cognitive functions, are against you. And so, once again you support the right man in your wrong headed quest to keep America, and the world, tethered to the Dark Ages. You support a man who denies and decries science at every turn, a man who would turn back the clock on decades – centuries even – of enlightened progress. You support a man who supports your superstition, though perhaps that’s only a matter of political expediency.

You’re right to believe that this election, above and beyond all others, will likely have a monumental – and potentially cataclysmic – effect on the world. Not just the so called ‘free world’, but the whole world. All of it. And so you support a man who wants to increase global nuclear proliferation, a man who doesn’t understand why the use of nuclear weapons would be an apocalyptically bad idea. You support a man so thin skinned and insecure that he can never, ever, walk away from a Twitter spat. You support making that man the Commander in Chief of the most powerful military force the world has ever known.

You’re right to believe that the United States of America has had a fall from grace. Although we’ve never actually lived up to our own inflated hype, and never achieved anything close to true social equality, our civil society has become decidedly uncivilised in recent years. And so you support a man who is the living embodiment of uncivilised behaviour, a man whose vile, crass and cheap ‘reality tv star’ lifestyle you aspire to. You support him because he is a reflection of your dark and deplorable soul. You support Trump because he is you writ large and orange.

You’re so right about so much, and yet so tragically, horrifyingly wrong about what it means to make America great, not ‘again’, but finally.

  1. I came dashing in here ready to say that you must be out of your tiny warped mind … until I got to the end of the second paragraph and beyond.
What is utterly depressing is that so many people are that ‘right’.
